This is the Catalogue of an exhibit of the same name at the Krugier Galleries in New York and in Geneva, Switzerland. And it is remarkable in that it compares numerous artists from Turner to Gericault all the way to Jackson Pollock. But of most interest here, perhaps, are works of art by Hugo himself. In 1862, Theophile Gautier wrote of Hugo, "If Victor Hugo were not a poet, he would be a top-notch painter." Look for yourself herein, beginning page 33, and note especially an early non-representational, "Composition abstraite" on page 43. Remarkable.
