This elegant volume, published in 1956 to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Sesshu's death, has 9 pages of text and 37 photograveur plates. All in Japanese except for English titles of prints. Book is as new except for tiny bump on lower front edge, othewise excellent tight, intact. DJ as new in Mylar covering. Comes in custom-made two-part Titled corrugated box. This reviewer has visited the Zen Temple in Yamaguchi where the garden was designed by Sesshu. He was a devout practitioner of Zen, but that's not all. While 15th century Japan produced a great many men of genius, Sesshu was the renaissance man of that time: he was a Zen priest, painter, landscape gardener, poet, calligrapher and collector. This store also has a small wood-covered 'accordian-like' long scroll by Sesshu, entitled "A Zen Landscape Journey," called by Reiko Chiba, "one of mankind's greatest works of art." Sesshu is the 'find' of the centuries and illuminates the art world of Japan, along with its profound influence in and by the unique philosophy of Zen.
